HIV/Aids Linked To Social Media

Manila, Philippines – The Department of Health (DOH) recently released a study indicating the HIV/AIDS cases are escalating and it was found that social networking is a contributing factor to this increase in HIV cases.

The study, entitled “OSN (online social network) Use and Risks for HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) among men Having Sex with Men (MSM),” was done from Sept 1 t Nov. 4 by a team of epidemiologists from the DOH led by Dr. Jovin Maestro.

One of the objectives of the study was to determine the connection between OSN and MSM which became the most “predominant type of sexual transmission” starting 2007. Prior to this, commercial sex workers were the leading source of infections in the country.

By the way, HIV stands for human immune deficiency virus. It is the virus that can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS. CDC estimates that about 56,000 people in the United States contracted HIV in 2006.

HIV damages a person’s body by destroying specific blood cells, called CD4+ T cells, which are crucial to helping the body fight diseases. HIV is spread primarily by:

- Not using a condom when having sex with a person who has HIV. All unprotected sex with someone who has HIV contains some risk. However:

- Unprotected anal sex is riskier than unprotected vaginal sex.

- Among men who have sex with other men, unprotected receptive anal sex is riskier than unprotected insertive anal sex.

- Having multiple sex partners or the presence of other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can increase the risk of infection during sex. Unprotected oral sex can also be a risk for HIV transmission, but it is a much lower risk than anal or vaginal sex.

- Sharing needles, syringes, rinse water, or other equipment used to prepare illicit drugs for injection.

- Being born to an infected mother—HIV can be passed from mother to child during pregnancy, birth, or breast-feeding.

Now let me just say that the study is right, social media is contributing in the increase of HIV cases in the country, perhaps all over the world for that matter. But studies also shows that parties and events also contributes to the increase. Which means, social media just like parties and events – another venue for people to meet.

The study focuses on the danger of social media in connection to the escalating problems of HIV. But social media is a strong influencer as well.

With the study, it depicts in a way that social media is a disadvantage or it depicts the negative side of it. But social media can also be an advantage to our agencies – to further educate our youth.

What am trying to say is if people goes to social media sites to look for sex, why don’t we use the same venue to educate them? Post information about the danger of HIV or having casual sex. Post pictures or videos about the disease.

Tips on how to say NO to sex invitations. How to detect people with bad intentions. Information on how to prevent having HIV. In other countries, social media is also a contributing factor in lowering down cases of STD (sexuallly transmitted disease) through education.

Why don’t we setup pages where people can ask questions about the disease? Why dont we have experts there to answer these questions online? While the study shows the negative side of social media, we can do a lot of effective things to turn social media to be on our side.

Now that we have the results of the study, what are we going to do about it? What is our next course of action to prevent the further increase of HIV cases in the country?

New Twitter profile headers draw Facebook comparison

Twitter this week unveiled its "mobile first" strategy, rolling out a brand new iPad app, updating Android and iOs apps, while simultaneously revamping the look of a user's profile on Twitter.com. 

The most buzzworthy element of this redesign has been the addition of a large, Facebook cover photo-like header photo to one's profile, both on the website and within all mobile apps. 

This header image also serves as a background image for the Twitter profile image, bio, location, and link.

The new profile design has rolled out to everyone, but the old Twitter profile design will remain in place until a user decides to upload a header image. 

Many have already done so, and are happily showing off their new profile headers using the service.

Many are pointing out the new header's similarity to Facebook's cover photo, rolled out when Timeline was launched in 2011.

And much like when Facebook Timeline's cover photo was launched, some clever Twitter users have been coming up with neat header photo "hacks" to work their own profile picture into the design. This make their profiles look that much cooler.

Is Facebook The New Email?

MANILA, Philippines - Then you wake up in the morning, what is the first tech thing you do? Check your phone for text messages or missed calls? Check your email inbox? Check your twitter messages? Or do you check your Facebook updates?

Social media has definitely change the way we do things and the way we keep updated with what's happening to our friends, love ones and even the world. The magic of social media is the word ''share''. People love to share - they share their photos, videos, news, opinions and people love to read them all.

Now, why do I even bother to ask the question ''Is Facebook the new email? Because just this year, Facebook modified user profiles to replace their email address with @facebook.com address. So the effect is everytime someone sends you a message via your @facebook.com address, it will become a Facebook message to the user.

While it's convinient to send message using Facebook considering that most of your friends, both personal and professional are on Facebook, one of the issues about sending messages in Facebook is privacy. How secure is it really to send messages in Facebook? Remember, this is a business message and not just a simple social message. That is why most of the people I talk to still uses email to communicate with their business counterparts.

Another disadvantage to my opinion in using Facebook message is the thin line that separates business and personal. Sometimes a user may not observe the proper etiquette in sending business messages due to the very nature of social media. There's a big difference between a professional or business message compared to a friendly message. Users should be able to or should I say watch out for their friendly behavior while using social media for business purposes.

So I think Facebook message and emaill will still co-exist. Facebook will not replace email, that would be a long shot. I do use Facebook to send some business messages but I limit it to inquiries and confirmation of certain meetings. But if I will be sending proposals, it is still email for me.

Miss Universe 2012 in Biloxi, Mississippi

Manila, Philippines - After months of speculation, organizers are finally setting their eyes on Biloxi, Mississippi, USA as venue for the staging of the 61st Miss Universe beauty pageant in

 December.

This was confirmed by Stella Marquez Araneta, chairperson of the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI), which sends delegates to other international beauty contests such as Miss International, Miss Tourism Queen International, and Miss Supranational.

“They are looking at the Biloxi Casino Resort in Mississippi. The pageant will be held either second week or third week of December,” said Mrs. Araneta during the send-off party for Elaine Kay Moll who will represent the Philippines in the 2012 Miss Supranational beauty contest in Sopot, Poland on Sept. 14, 2012.

Araneta’s announcement ended rumors that the Miss Universe contest would be cancelled this year due to time constraint. With the staging of Miss Universe pageant in December, there is a possibility that the succeeding pageants in the future would also be held during the holidays, she added.

“First it was in May. Then, they moved it to July. Then September. Now it’s December. Perhaps they will stage it every December in the future.”

Araneta says there is also a possibility that the schedule of coronation dates for the Bb. Pilipinas in the future would be adjusted, due to the sudden change in the schedule of Miss Universe pageant.

“I don’t know how this will affect our local pageants in terms of schedule. We will still discuss it.”

The Miss Universe pageant was pushed to December to give way to other important events such as the recent London Olympics and the forthcoming US Presidential Elections in November.

With the pageant’s new schedule, Leila Lopes of Angola now holds the record for the longest reign of Miss Universe, spanning almost 15 months. The same record goes with Miss Universe third runner-up Shamcey Supsup, of the Philippines.

Janine Tugonon, who will represent the country in the Miss Universe beauty pageant this year, is now in thick of preparations for the contest. “I’m very excited for the pageant. Sana malaman na natin talaga kung saan ang venue kasi excited na rin ang mga relatives and friends ko to watch the Miss Universe contest.”

A Pharmacy cum laude graduate at the University of Sto. Tomas, Tugonon has also trained at Ballet Manila. She stands 5’9” and measures 35-25-36.

Tugonon, 22, of Balanga, Bataan, says she is now focused on hitting the gym to achieve a toned body.

On her gown and national costume for the pageant, she says they still have to be finalized. Tugonon says she has not seen all the pictures of this year’s candidates, but she finds Misses Venezuela and Ecuador beautiful, based on their photo shoots.

Supsup, also a top-notch architect, wished Tugonon good luck on her journey to the Miss Universe pageant. “She has transformed a lot! Kung maaalala mo lang ‘yung mga early days namin sa Bb. Pilipinas, and compare it these days, you can say Janine has really improved.”

Like a big sister, Supsup also gave tips to Tugonon for the pageant. “I told her what to wear, when to impress, or what to do in this kind of activity. Things like that.”

Recalling her days in the Miss Universe pageant in Brazil last year, in which she stormed the stage with her signature “tsunami” walk, Supsup says the only thing she regretted about the pageant was that she never explored a lot of time with the other girls.

“Language barrier was the big problem. One time, I joined the table with the Latina candidates. For a while it was OK pero later, hindi na kami nagkakaintidihan kasi we don’t speak the same language. That’s why I decided to join the Asian candidates. Our common language is English, kaya nagkakaintindihan kami.”

Supsup also says she behaved well during the pageant and she never got involved in any cat fights with the other girls. “Mabait naman ako during the pageant. Wala naman grabeng away na nangyari sa mga candidates that time. But I remember on several occasions, nagtatalo ‘yung ibang girls sa paggamit ng computer. Mahaba kasi ang pila nun. After rehearsals, or during our break, unahan na kami sa paggamit ng computer.”

After her reign in Bb. Pilipinas, Supsup says she attended to dinner or lunch invites. “Food trip talaga ang nangyari nun. For a while hindi ako nag-diet.”

These days, Supsup says that she is still in contact with other candidates in the Miss Universe pageant. “Yung iba may contact ako sa Facebook. Recently, I played host to Miss Singapore who visited our country. She went to Boracay, pero I toured her in Metro Manila.”

Supsup also keeps herself busy with architectural projects. “I am also studying how to speak Spanish and training on TV hosting.”

Estonian nurse slammed for Facebook posts of dying baby

A nurse came under media fire in Estonia Thursday after she posted a photo of a dying three-month-old baby on her Facebook profile along with the child's confidential medical data.

"I had no idea I can't post the photos I take at the hospital and my comments about my work on Facebook," the woman told Estonia's leading Eesti Paevaleht newspaper.

No further details were provided about either the woman or the baby other than the incident occurred at Tartu University hospital in southern Estonia.

The facility said Thursday it will launch its own investigation into the case and will decide whether and how to punish the nurse.

"My friends also describe their work on Facebook, so I thought I can do it too," the woman told Eesti Paevaleht, while also admitting she had not asked the child's parents permission to either take or post the photo.

All medical staff in Estonia are required to sign agreements vowing to respect patient confidentiality.

The nurse also posted about other medical procedures she had performed on an ailing four-year-old.

"We are all learning how to behave on social media, but actions like this by any nurse should be strongly denounced," Ester Pruuden, head of the Estonian Nursing Association, said in a press statement Thursday.

Estonia, an ex-Soviet republic of 1.3 million people, joined both the EU and NATO in 2004.
